Go to Italy for the rugby in 2017

It's always a good time to visit Italy, but 2017 will be a particularly good year to visit – especially if you are a rugby fan.

The Six Nations tournament will be held in England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France and Italy in February and March, and three matches are taking place in Italy. It's a great opportunity to combine a holiday in Italy with this exciting sporting event.

Key details you need to know

If you want to watch the rugby in Italy, there are a few important details to know. Firstly, there will be three rugby matches held in Italy throughout the tournament:

• If you want to see Ireland take on Italy, this will be held on February 11th;

• Italy v Wales is one week earlier on Sunday 5th February. And Italy take on neighbours France on 11th March 2017.

All of these matches will be held in the same place: the Stadio Olimpico Rome's main stadium with a capacity of 70,000.

If you want to see more than one game, your best bet is to head out for the Wales and Ireland games. These are only separated by one week, so you could easily fit them both in. Alternatively, head to Italy for the Ireland game at the start of February.

Discover Rome during your holiday

Whether you watch the Italy v Ireland rugby match or any of the others, you will find yourself in a wonderful setting when you travel to Rome.

The capital of Italy is one of the most exciting destinations in Europe and there is so much to see, so you could easily spend a few days or a week here exploring the sights. A few things you may want to see during your time here include:

• the Colosseum;
• the Spanish Steps;
• the Trevi Fountain;
• St Peter's Basilica;
• the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel;
• the Roman Forum;
• the Pantheon;
• Capitoline Hill.

Alternatively, head out of Rome completely and see a different area of Italy. Because of its relatively small size and the amount of incredible destinations packed into it, Italy is the perfect destination for a multi-centre holiday.

For example you could visit cities like Turin, Milan, Florence, Venice or Naples. Or you could head to the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Abruzzo or Umbria to discover the beautiful natural scenery. You could even hop over to Sardinia or Sicily for a completely different experience.
